You may have heard of the R.I.S.E. Campaign or LETRS training in Arkansas.
LETRS was written by Dr. Louisa Moats, who was instrumental in writing the IDA exam (CEERI). So the same material can be found in both. Dr. Moats has since revamped LETRS to units instead of modules. The units have updated research and are taught in a different order. Our state is not yet offering training in what is known as the “Classic LETRS” modules or the “New LETRS” units.
You may be going through the Foundations training now, or your school may encourage you to go. The goal is for everyone to go through LETRS Foundations taught by someone at their co-op, so it you are a certified teacher, you will probably have a chance to go. It will be good knowledge to have. Arkansas is doing a good thing in taking these first steps, and we don’t want to discourage anyone from learning the Intro LETRS Foundations with their own school when it is offered. We want to support ADE in trying to get the Intro level off the ground.
If you have had Connections or the Therapy Level course, you have been taught the science of reading, as well as the application piece of how to teach it. However, if you are curious about LETRS, you may also be interested in this training.
The training offered this summer is what comes after Foundations. There are 12 modules in the original LETRS. Most people talk about the first 10. Modules 1-3 covers The Challenge of Learning to Read; The Speech Sounds of English: Phonetics, Phonology, and Phoneme Awareness; Spellography for Teachers: How English Spelling Words. This class will be held June 26-29.
Price is $1500
